A simple and flavorful slow cooker recipe for loaded hot dogs that’s perfect for parties and casual gatherings. This dump-and-go method requires minimal prep and delivers a smoky, tangy, and cheesy crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds hot dogs (about 900g), smoked beef or classic all-beef variety
  • 8 to 10 hot dog buns
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (about 200g), sharp or mild
  • 1 cup ketchup (240ml)
  • 1/4 cup mustard (60ml), yellow or spicy brown
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/2 cup pickle relish (120ml)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted (optional, for brushing buns)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce by whisking together ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder in a medium bowl until smooth.
  2. Thinly slice the yellow onion.
  3. Lightly spray or butter the crockpot. Place hot dogs evenly on the bottom, then spread sliced onions on top.
  4. Pour the prepared sauce evenly over the hot dogs and onions. Gently mix to coat without breaking up the hot dogs.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours or on high for 1.5 to 2 hours until hot dogs are tender and sauce is bubbling.
  6. About 15 minutes before serving, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top and cover until melted.
  7. Right before serving, stir in pickle relish.
  8. Optionally, brush buns with melted butter and toast them lightly on a griddle or in the oven.
  9. Spoon the hot dog and sauce mixture into toasted buns and serve immediately.

Notes

Do not stir too often during cooking to allow flavors to meld. Thinly slice onions for best texture. If sauce is too thick near the end, add a splash of water or broth. For smokier flavor, add a few drops of liquid smoke. Use higher-quality hot dogs for better texture. Can be prepared ahead and refrigerated overnight before cooking. Leftovers keep well for up to 3 days refrigerated or 2 months frozen.
