This easy brown sugar glazed sweet potato casserole features tender sliced sweet potatoes coated in a buttery brown sugar glaze and topped with crunchy pecans. It’s a simple, crowd-pleasing side dish perfect for holidays or cozy weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 large sweet potatoes (about 2 1/2 pounds), peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for greasing the dish)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup pecan halves or pieces
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (optional, for extra crunch on pecans)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Peel the sweet potatoes and slice them into 1/2-inch thick rounds. Lightly grease the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish with the 2 tablespoons of melted butter.
  2. Layer the sweet potato slices in the dish, overlapping them slightly like shingles. Do not stack them; aim for a single layer (or slightly overlapping) for even cooking.
  3. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the 1/2 cup of butter. Add the brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Whisk continuously until the sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth and bubbling gently, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Pour the hot glaze evenly over the sweet potato slices, using a spatula to spread it if needed.
  5. Sprinkle the pecan halves (or pieces) evenly over the top. If using the optional extra brown sugar, toss the pecans in a small bowl with the 2 tablespoons of sugar first, then scatter them over the dish.
  6. Place the dish in the preheated oven, uncovered, and bake for 25-30 minutes. Check at the 20-minute mark—the sweet potatoes should be fork-tender and the glaze bubbling and slightly thickened. If the pecans are browning too quickly, tent the dish loosely with aluminum foil for the remaining time.
  7. For deeper caramelization, switch the oven to broil for the last 2-3 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes after removing from the oven. Serve warm, spooning some of the extra glaze from the bottom of the dish over each portion.

Notes

Slice sweet potatoes evenly for consistent cooking. Toast pecans in a dry skillet for 2-3 minutes before using to deepen their flavor. The dish can be assembled up to 24 hours in advance (without baking) and refrigerated; add about 10 minutes to the baking time when starting from cold. For extra glaze, make 1.5 times the glaze recipe.
