Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin puree
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar (for cream cheese swirl)
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (for cream cheese swirl)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang on long sides. Grease exposed ends.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, pumpkin pie spice, and cinnamon.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vegetable oil until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, whisking well. Stir in pumpkin puree and vanilla extract.
  4. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Fold gently with a rubber spatula until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips, reserving 2 tablespoons for topping.
  5. In a separate bowl, beat softened cream cheese with an electric mixer until smooth. Add sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla, beating until fully combined.
  6. Pour half the pumpkin batter into prepared pan. Spoon cream cheese mixture over batter in dollops, then spread gently. Top with remaining pumpkin batter. Use a butter knife to swirl layers together with 5-6 figure-eight motions.
  7. Sprinkle reserved chocolate chips on top. Bake for 55-65 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. Tent with foil if browning too quickly after 40 minutes.
  8. Cool in pan for 15 minutes, then lift onto a wire rack using parchment paper. Cool completely before slicing.

Notes

Use full-fat cream cheese for best swirl. Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature. Do not overmix batter. Cool completely before slicing to avoid crumbling.
