This bright, zesty cranberry sauce is made with fresh cranberries, orange, and ginger, and comes together in just 5 minutes of active prep. It’s perfect for holiday gatherings or any meal that needs a burst of flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces fresh or frozen cranberries (one standard bag)
  • 1 large orange (zest and juice)
  • 1-inch piece fresh ginger (peeled and grated)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar (100 grams)
  • ¼ cup water (60 ml)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Zest and juice the orange. Wash the orange, then grate about 1 tablespoon of zest using a microplane (avoid the white pith). Cut the orange in half and squeeze out about ⅓ cup of juice. Set both aside.
  2. Grate the ginger. Peel the 1-inch piece of ginger with a spoon, then grate it finely with a microplane or box grater to get about 1 tablespoon.
  3. Bloom the ginger. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the orange juice and grated ginger. Simmer for about 1 minute, stirring constantly, until fragrant.
  4. Add the cranberries, sugar, water, and salt. Stir in the cranberries (no need to thaw if frozen), sugar, water, and a pinch of salt. Stir to combine.
  5. Bring to a boil, then simmer. Increase heat to high and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to medium-low and let it simmer for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries have burst and the sauce has thickened slightly.
  6. Add the orange zest. Stir in the orange zest, then remove the pot from the heat.
  7. Cool and serve. Let the sauce cool in the pot for about 10 minutes. It will continue to thicken as it cools. Serve warm, at room temperature, or cold.

Notes

Don’t skip blooming the ginger in orange juice—it mellows the raw heat and infuses the sauce with warm spice. Add the orange zest at the end to keep it bright. The sauce thickens as it cools, so don’t worry if it looks loose after simmering. Make ahead for best flavor; it keeps in the fridge for up to 2 weeks or freezes for 3 months.
