classic perfect mint julep - featured image

A simple, refreshing mint julep cocktail made with fresh bourbon, mint, sugar, and crushed ice. Perfect for warm weather and easy to prepare in about 5 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 810 fresh mint sprigs (plus extra for garnish)
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar (or superfine sugar)
  • 2 ounces fresh bourbon (e.g., Buffalo Trace or Woodford Reserve)
  • Crushed ice (enough to fill a julep cup or glass)
  • 1 tablespoon cold water
  • Optional: lemon twist or a few drops of bitters

Instructions

  1. Gently rinse 8-10 fresh mint sprigs under cold water and pat dry.
  2. Place the mint leaves and 1 teaspoon granulated sugar into your julep cup or glass.
  3. Using a muddler, press the mint and sugar together just enough to release the fragrant oils, about 15 seconds. Avoid over-muddling.
  4. Add 1 tablespoon cold water to help dissolve the sugar, then gently stir with a bar spoon until sugar is mostly dissolved, about 10 seconds.
  5. Pour in 2 ounces (60 ml) of fresh bourbon.
  6. Pack the glass full of crushed ice, mounding it slightly above the rim.
  7. Give the mixture a gentle stir for 10-15 seconds to chill and combine flavors without diluting too much.
  8. Add a sprig of fresh mint on top, slapping the mint between your hands before garnishing to release more aroma.
  9. Serve immediately while icy cold with condensation on the outside of the cup.

Notes

Muddle mint gently to avoid bitterness. Use crushed ice for best chill and slow dilution. Chill glass beforehand for extra cold drink. Can substitute sugar with simple syrup (½ oz) or use rye whiskey for a spicier twist. Serve immediately to maintain freshness and chill.
