This cozy slow cooker spiced apple cider is the ultimate make-ahead drink for a crowd. It fills your house with a warm, inviting aroma and lets you be a relaxed, present host because it does all the hard work for you.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 64 ounces (1.9 liters) Apple Cider
  • 1 Large Orange, sliced
  • 1 Large Apple, sliced
  • 4–5 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 6–8 Whole Cloves
  • 3–4 Whole Star Anise
  • 1 tablespoon Whole Allspice Berries
  • 2–3 tablespoons Maple Syrup or Brown Sugar (optional)
  • Fresh Cranberries (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prep the Fruit (5 minutes): Wash the orange and apple. Slice the orange into thin rounds, about 1/4-inch thick. Do the same with the apple.
  2. Combine Everything in the Slow Cooker (5 minutes): Pour the entire 64-ounce bottle of apple cider into a 6-quart slow cooker. Gently place the sliced orange and apple rounds into the liquid.
  3. Add the Spices (2 minutes): Drop in the 4-5 cinnamon sticks, 6-8 whole cloves, 3-4 star anise, and the tablespoon of whole allspice berries. If desired, add 2-3 tablespoons of maple syrup or brown sugar. Give everything a gentle stir.
  4. Slow Cook on Low (3-4 hours): Put the lid on the slow cooker and set it to LOW. Let it cook for 3-4 hours until the cider is steaming hot, the fruit has softened, and the house smells fragrant.
  5. Strain (5 minutes): Carefully ladle the hot cider through a fine-mesh strainer into a large punch bowl or clean pot to remove the fruit slices and whole spices.
  6. Transfer Back to Slow Cooker for Serving: Pour the strained cider back into the clean slow cooker. Set it to the ‘Warm’ setting to keep it at the perfect drinking temperature.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Right before serving, add a few fresh or frozen cranberries and a fresh cinnamon stick or two for presentation. Ladle the warm cider into mugs and serve.

Notes

Don’t boil the cider; use LOW heat to avoid bitterness. For easy cleanup, tie spices in a cheesecloth sachet. Taste and adjust sweetness before serving. The cider can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
