These creepy-cute witch finger pretzel rods are dipped in green-tinted white chocolate with almond fingernails. They come together in about 20 minutes of actual work and are always the first thing to disappear from the Halloween dessert table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (12-ounce) package pretzel rods (about 20 rods)
  • 2 cups (12 ounces) white chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup (3 ounces) green candy melts OR green gel food coloring
  • 1/4 cup (1 ounce) sliced almonds
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil or vegetable shortening (optional, for thinning chocolate)
  • Red gel food coloring (optional, for ‘blood’ effect)
  • Parchment paper or silicone baking mat (for setting)

Instructions

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Make sure it’s large enough to hold all pretzel rods without touching.
  2. Sort through sliced almonds and pick out about 20 flat, even slices for fingernails. Set aside near work area. If toasting, spread on a separate baking sheet and toast at 350°F for 3-4 minutes until fragrant; cool completely.
  3. Melt white chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on 50% power for 30 seconds, then stir. Repeat in 15-second intervals, stirring thoroughly after each, until chocolate is about 75% melted. Stir continuously until residual heat melts the rest. Chocolate should be smooth and glossy.
  4. Add green color: If using green candy melts, add them to white chocolate chips before melting. If using gel food coloring, add one tiny drop to melted white chocolate and stir; add more drop by drop until you reach a pale, witchy green.
  5. Hold a pretzel rod by one end and dip into green white chocolate, leaving about 1 inch undipped at the top (the ‘base’ of the finger). Lift out and let excess chocolate drip back into bowl for a few seconds.
  6. Place dipped rod on prepared baking sheet. Use an offset spatula or butter knife to spread chocolate evenly if needed. Rod should be completely covered except for undipped end.
  7. While chocolate is still wet, press a sliced almond gently into the chocolate at the tip of the rod (dipped end). Position so about half the almond extends beyond the chocolate. Press firmly enough to stay put but not so hard it goes through the chocolate. Repeat for each finger.
  8. Optional: While chocolate is still soft, use the back of a butter knife or toothpick to gently press 2-3 horizontal lines into the chocolate near the middle of the rod to create knuckle lines.
  9. Optional: For ‘blood’ effect, dip a toothpick in red gel food coloring and dab a tiny bit at the cuticle area of the almond nail.
  10. Let set completely: Place baking sheet in refrigerator for 15-20 minutes, or leave at room temperature for 30-40 minutes. Chocolate should be firm to the touch and no longer shiny.
  11. Carefully remove from baking sheet using a thin spatula. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

Notes

White chocolate is finicky—melt on 50% power and stir frequently to prevent seizing. If chocolate gets too thick while working, microwave for 5-10 seconds at 50% power and stir. Imperfect fingers look more realistic. These taste better the next day as the pretzel absorbs a bit of moisture from the chocolate. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days or in the refrigerator for up to a week. Do not freeze.
