Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 1 small lime, juiced (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1/4 cup finely diced red onion
  • 1 small Roma tomato, seeds removed and diced (optional)
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin (optional)
  • 6 large round tortilla chips
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream (or Greek yogurt)
  • 2 black olives, sliced
  • 1 small piece of red bell pepper, cut into a tiny triangle
  • A few cilantro leaves

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Make the tortilla chip bats: Using kitchen shears or a small knife, cut large round tortilla chips into bat shapes by cutting a small notch out of the top for ‘ears’ and two small triangles out of the bottom for ‘wings’.
  3. Season the bats: Arrange cut chips on the prepared baking sheet. Brush each lightly with olive oil, then sprinkle with smoked paprika and salt. Bake for 5-7 minutes until lightly golden and fragrant. Let cool on the sheet.
  4. Prepare the avocados: Cut each avocado in half, remove the pit, and scoop the flesh into a mixing bowl.
  5. Mash the avocados to your desired consistency using a fork or potato masher.
  6. Add lime juice, diced red onion, tomato (if using), chopped cilantro, salt, garlic powder, and cumin. Stir until well combined. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  7. Transfer guacamole to a serving bowl and smooth the top with a spoon.
  8. Create the spooky face: Use black olive slices for eyes, a red bell pepper triangle for the nose, and arrange cilantro leaves around the top for ‘hair’ or ‘spider legs’.
  9. Add sour cream details: Spoon sour cream into a small zip-top bag, snip off a tiny corner, and pipe small ‘spider webs’ or ‘ghostly swirls’ onto the guacamole surface.
  10. Gently press the cooled tortilla chip bats into the guacamole around the edges so they appear to be ‘flying’ around the spooky face.
  11. Serve immediately with extra tortilla chips for dipping.

Notes

For best results, choose avocados that yield slightly to gentle pressure. If making ahead, press plastic wrap directly onto the guacamole surface to prevent browning. Add decorations and bat chips just before serving. The tortilla chip bats are best eaten the same day but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
