A hauntingly good blood orange sangria that looks spooky and sophisticated, perfect for Halloween parties. This easy recipe combines tart blood oranges, sweet apple, and dry red wine for a layered flavor that keeps guests coming back for more.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine (Tempranillo or Garnacha recommended)
  • 1/2 cup brandy
  • 1/4 cup orange liqueur (Cointreau or Triple Sec)
  • 2 tablespoons honey or agave syrup (optional)
  • 4 medium blood oranges
  • 1 Granny Smith apple
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 can lychees in syrup (for garnish, optional)
  • 1/2 cup blueberries (for garnish, optional)
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs (for garnish, optional)
  • Food-grade dry ice (for effect, optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash blood oranges and apple thoroughly. Slice 3 blood oranges into thin rounds (about 1/4 inch thick). Cut the remaining blood orange in half and juice it (should yield about 1/4 cup juice). Core the apple and slice into thin half-moons, leaving skin on.
  2. Place sliced blood oranges, apple slices, and cranberries in a large pitcher or punch bowl. Pour brandy and orange liqueur over the fruit, then add fresh blood orange juice. Use a wooden spoon to gently press the fruit to release some juices. Let sit for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Pour the entire bottle of red wine over the macerated fruit. Add cinnamon stick and stir gently. If using honey or agave, drizzle in and stir until dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness or alcohol as desired.
  4. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally 4-6 hours or overnight.
  5. About 30 minutes before serving, drain lychees and carefully stuff each with a blueberry to make ‘eyeballs’. Refrigerate until serving.
  6. When ready to serve, give sangria a gentle stir. Fill glasses with ice (optional) and ladle sangria into glasses, ensuring each gets a mix of fruit. Add lychee eyeballs and a rosemary sprig to each glass.
  7. Optional: Add a small piece of food-grade dry ice to the punch bowl right before serving for a smoky effect. Handle with tongs and do not put dry ice directly in glasses.

Notes

Don’t skip the maceration step—letting fruit sit in brandy and liqueur for 10 minutes makes a huge difference. Use a dry red wine; avoid overly sweet wines. For best flavor, refrigerate 4-6 hours or overnight. The sangria keeps in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For a non-alcoholic version, swap wine for non-alcoholic red wine or pomegranate juice and replace brandy with extra juice or sparkling water.
